<p>Plusieurs études ont été menées afin de caractériser les types climatiques auxquels est exposé le territoire national. Les zonages obtenus diffèrent selon les méthodes utilisées, la nature et le nombre des paramètres pris en compte, le maillage territorial des données et la période de référence. En 2010, le climat de la commune était ainsi de type <a href="Climat_de_la_France#2010-T4" title="Climat de la France">climat océanique altéré</a>, selon une étude du <a href="Centre_national_de_la_recherche_scientifique" title="Centre national de la recherche scientifique">Centre national de la recherche scientifique</a> (CNRS) s'appuyant sur une méthode combinant données climatiques et facteurs de milieu (topographie, occupation des sols, etc.) et des données couvrant la <a href="Normale_climatique" title="Normale climatique">période 1971-2000</a><sup id="cite_ref-Joly_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Joly-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>. En 2020, le climat prédominant est classé Cfb, selon la <a href="Classification_de_K%C3%B6ppen" title="Classification de Köppen">classification de Köppen-Geiger</a>, pour la période 1988-2017, à savoir un climat tempéré à été frais sans saison sèche<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>. Par ailleurs <a href="M%C3%A9t%C3%A9o-France" title="Météo-France">Météo-France</a> publie en 2020 une nouvelle typologie des <a href="Climat_de_la_France" title="Climat de la France">climats de la France métropolitaine</a> dans laquelle la commune est exposée à un <a href="Climat_de_la_France#MF-T4" title="Climat de la France">climat de montagne ou de marges de montagne</a><sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> et est dans la région climatique <a href="Climat_de_la_France#MF-R26" title="Climat de la France"> Alpes du nord</a>, caractérisée par une pluviométrie annuelle de 1 200 à 1 500 <abbr class="abbr" title="millimètre">mm</abbr>, irrégulièrement répartie en été<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>. </p><p>L'évolution de l’occupation des sols de la commune et de ses infrastructures peut être observée sur les différentes représentations cartographiques du territoire : la <a href="Carte_de_Cassini" title="Carte de Cassini">carte de Cassini</a> (<abbr class="abbr" title="18ᵉ siècle"><span class="romain">XVIII</span><sup style="font-size:72%">e</sup></abbr> siècle), la <a href="Carte_d'%C3%A9tat-major" title="Carte d'état-major">carte d'état-major</a> (1820-1866) et les cartes ou photos aériennes de l'<a href="Institut_national_de_l'information_g%C3%A9ographique_et_foresti%C3%A8re" title="Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière">IGN</a> pour la période actuelle (1950 à aujourd'hui)<sup id="cite_ref-19" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-19"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>Carte 1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Histoire">Histoire</h2></div>

<p>Les premières traces d'occupation de la commune datent du campaniforme (environ du <abbr class="abbr" title="Deuxième">II<sup>e</sup></abbr> millénaire <abbr class="abbr nowrap" title="avant Jésus-Christ">av. J.-C.</abbr>), elles ont été mises au jour lors des travaux du Lit-au-Roi au niveau du lac de Bart. Une pierre à cupules était visible au même endroit.<br>

En 1854, au lieu-dit Rocher de la Corbières , une hache et une faucille de <a href="Bronze" title="Bronze">bronze</a> ont été mises au jour.<br>

Sous l'occupation romaine, une villa romaine (villa de <i>Massinus</i>) est attestée par des vestiges de tombe à incinération au lieu-dit Paris de Boutz.<br>

Les différents vestiges gallo-romains mis au jour sur la commune s'étalent de Néron à Constantin (environ de 60 <abbr class="abbr nowrap" title="après Jésus-Christ">apr. J.-C.</abbr> à 320). L'occupation gallo-romaine est liée au passage sur la commune de la <a href="Voie_romaine" title="Voie romaine">voie romaine</a> de <i>Lemincum</i>.

</p><p>Un <a href="Sarcophage" title="Sarcophage">sarcophage</a> <a href="Gallo-romain" class="mw-redirect" title="Gallo-romain">gallo-romain</a> à deux places connu sous le nom de <i>Lit-au-Roi</i> se trouvait anciennement sur la commune. Ce sarcophage est celui de Silanius Luciolus et sa femme Connia antiquae. Il se trouve depuis 1760 sur la commune de <a href="Lavours" title="Lavours">Lavours</a>. Ce sarcophage doit son nom au fait qu'en 877, il aurait servi de tombeau au roi <a href="Charles_II_le_Chauve" title="Charles II le Chauve">Charles le Chauve</a> avant le transfert du corps de ce dernier à Saint-Pierre de Nantua. La famille d'Escrivieux, citée pour la première fois au <abbr class="abbr" title="12ᵉ siècle"><span class="romain">XII</span><sup style="font-size:72%">e</sup></abbr> siècle, possédait une <a href="Maison_forte" title="Maison forte">maison forte</a> au hameau du Grand Écrivieu aujourd'hui totalement ruinée. Au <abbr class="abbr" title="17ᵉ siècle"><span class="romain">XVII</span><sup style="font-size:72%">e</sup></abbr> siècle, la famille s'éteint sans postérité et le fief est cédé successivement à plusieurs familles de la région.

</p><p>Le hameau du Grand Écrivieux présente encore de nos jours les restes d'un couvent et d'un <a href="Presbyt%C3%A8re" title="Presbytère">presbytère</a> <a href="Architecture_Renaissance" class="mw-redirect" title="Architecture Renaissance">Renaissance</a>. Au <abbr class="abbr" title="19ᵉ siècle"><span class="romain">XIX</span><sup style="font-size:72%">e</sup></abbr> siècle, la commune présente une importante <a href="S%C3%A9riciculture" title="Sériciculture">sériciculture</a> (élevage des vers à soie) et compte jusqu'à cinq cafés.

</p><p>En 1878, un pont, dit <i>pont de Lucey</i>, est construit entre le hameau de Rives (Ain) et le village de <a href="Lucey_(Savoie)" title="Lucey (Savoie)">Lucey</a> (Savoie). Le 22 juin 1940, à la suite de l'invasion du village par les troupes allemandes, ce pont est détruit par les troupes françaises. Les combats dans ce hameau sont parmi les derniers de la campagne de France.

</p><p>En 1982, les travaux de dérivation du Rhône ont fortement modifié le paysage de Massignieu-de-Rives ; un lac, appelé <i>lac du Lit du Roi</i>, comprenant une base de loisirs, a été aménagé dans le nord la commune, près du hameau des Mures.

<p>La commune de Massignieu-de-Rives est membre de la <a href="Communaut%C3%A9_de_communes_Bugey_Sud" title="Communauté de communes Bugey Sud">communauté de communes Bugey Sud</a>, un <a href="%C3%89tablissement_public_de_coop%C3%A9ration_intercommunale" title="Établissement public de coopération intercommunale">établissement public de coopération intercommunale</a> (EPCI) à fiscalité propre créé le <time class="nowrap" datetime="2014-01-01" data-sort-value="2014-01-01"><abbr class="abbr" title="premier">1<sup>er</sup></abbr> janvier 2014</time> dont le siège est à <a href="Belley" title="Belley">Belley</a>. Ce dernier est par ailleurs membre d'autres groupements intercommunaux<sup id="cite_ref-20" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-20"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>16<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.

<p>L'évolution du nombre d'habitants est connue à travers les <a href="Recensement_de_la_population" title="Recensement de la population">recensements de la population</a> effectués dans la commune depuis 1793. Pour les communes de moins de 10 000 habitants, une enquête de recensement portant sur toute la population est réalisée tous les cinq ans, les populations de référence des années intermédiaires étant quant à elles estimées par interpolation ou extrapolation<sup id="cite_ref-insee_orga_rec_24-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-insee_orga_rec-24"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>20<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.
